Having brought his idea for boat building workshops to the Ideas Lab in June 2016, Clive Anderson hosted a series of five evening workshops during the last week of September 2016, to demonstrate how to design and build a simple sailboat using basic DIY skills.

From college students to senior citizens these sessions brought together local people with an interest in boatbuilding and boating, to build a boat that makes sailing on the Western Cleddau accessible and affordable to anybody, through using simple joinery skills and a flat-pack kit.

As well as practical skills there were also discussions about possible slipway and mooring locations using maps of the Western Cleddau. With over 80% of those who took part saying they enjoyed the sessions and almost 60% saying that they are likely to use the they learnt to build another boat, the success of these workshops demonstrates a great desire to see and take part in activities on the river.

Boat is looking good. Looking forward seeing one or more (hopefully) on the river!

The boat hull is now almost complete and several of the participants have continued to progress the build in the following weeks. So, watch this space for news of the completed boat and launch…
