A fantastic opportunity to hear about John’s work as an artist and photographer using examples taken from the last 30 years to discuss a range of issues and approaches to making the work and consolidating his individual practice within a broader context.

John, who is a regular visitor to Pembrokeshire, works largely within the broad context of landscape. Using photography and the moving image, much of his work integrates texts with images in ways that challenge the realist paradigm traditionally underpinning a range of documentary and realist practices. His work pays allegiance to the traditions of pictorial landscape whilst reflecting upon issues within contemporary culture, politics and representation.

In addition to gallery exhibitions (most recently in a major exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne) he has produced a number of public art works in a range of media and publications. Recent books include Futureland Now (ed. Liz Wells); Local with Dr Henry Kippin and He with Professor David Chandler. He has worked on numerous public commissions including Cold War Pastoral from Greenham Common, Berkshire and has exhibited at many venues including the Imperial War Museum and the Photographer’s Gallery in London; Compton Verney in Warwickshire and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

Most recently he has completed a number of public billboards both in Germany, Greece and in the North of England. His work has been widely exhibited both in the U.K. and overseas and is in many public and private collections. He was chair of the Association of Photography in Higher Education from 2008 – 2011 and was a member of the 2B Butler’s Wharf artists’ collective in London. He has contributed to numerous academic conferences in the U.K. and overseas, most recently at the Universities of Newcastle and Westminster. He is currently chair of Locus + and is Emeritus Professor in Photography at the University of Sunderland.
